Bathalegala: Hiking Sri Lanka’s Iconic “Bible Rock”

 

Introduction

Bathalegala, more famously known as Bible Rock, is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic mountains, instantly recognizable by its unique, flat-topped shape that resembles a giant open bible. Located in the Kegalle District near Aranayake, this 798-meter-high rock offers breathtaking views of the Central Highlands and is a popular hiking destination for both locals and travelers. Getting to Bathalegala

The mountain is situated between Mawanella and Aranayake.

• From Colombo – Drive along the Colombo–Kandy Road (A1) until you reach Mawanella. From there, turn towards Aranayake and follow the road signs to Bathalegala.
• From Kandy – Take the same A1 route towards Colombo, turning off at Mawanella.
• Public Transport – Buses run from Mawanella to Aranayake regularly, and tuk-tuks are available to the trailhead.

The Hike
