Ridiviharaya: The Sacred Silver Temple of Kurunegala

Hidden among the serene hills of Kurunegala lies Ridiviharaya, a temple with a rich history tied to ancient kings, sacred legends, and the Buddhist heritage of Sri Lanka. On my recent visit, I was struck by the spiritual calm and timeless beauty of this sacred site.

A Temple Built from Silver and Devotion

Ridiviharaya, meaning "Silver Temple", was built during the reign of King Dutugemunu (161–137 BC). According to ancient chronicles, silver ore discovered at this site was used in the construction of the great Ruwanwelisaya stupa in Anuradhapura. To honor this contribution, the king ordered a temple to be constructed here.

The temple has since stood for over two millennia, preserving stories carved into stone, painted on cave walls, and told through generations.

Architectural Beauty and Spiritual Significance

Ridiviharaya is a masterpiece of both ancient and Kandyan-period architecture. The temple complex includes:
- The Main Image House (Sarasvathi Mandapaya), showcasing colorful Kandyan-style murals
- Ancient Bodhi Tree, believed to be over 2000 years old
- Multiple cave shrines with stone Buddha statues
- Intricate wood carvings and stone inscriptions

The peaceful surroundings, chanting monks, and occasional toll of temple bells make the atmosphere truly meditative.
